With the forthcoming closure of Tyrone County Hospital and its move to the new complex at Donaghanie
Road, this week we publish a series of fascinating photos showing the building of a major extension to th
e ‘County’ back in the late 1930s and early 40s.
The photos show
workmen laying the foundations for the building just before World War 2, through to its final construction by the end of the war. The extension – the first major development on the site since the hospital opened in 1899 – housed a number of wards, an operating theatre and X-Ray department. In our Big Interview this week, Omagh-born priest Fr James O’Kane reflects on a lifetime spent in the mission fields of Africa. As a member of the SMA community, Fr James spent years tending to the poor and u
nderprivileged in Nigeria and Zambia. Now enjoying retirement in his native Tyrone, he extends thanks to those from the area who supported him over the years.
There are also details of a forthcoming fundraising day for the setting up of a mental health drop-in centre in memory of local man Kevin Fox who died last July.?Last week, all ages were out enjoying the Terex Family Fun Day at Todds Leap while cyclists turned out in their droves for a series of ‘Mo’ events in Gortin. Omagh Probus Club were also busy preparing to host the All-Ireland Probus Rally which took place recently in
the Silverbirch Hotel.
Meanwhile Omagh singer Donna Taggart has announced a series of extra dates for her 2017 Irish tour.?And Beragh twins Pat and Robert Colton celebrated their 60th with a bash in Farley’s Bar.
On the photographic front, we caught up with Ballygawley Presbyterian Church’s Vintage Rally and Ballygawley Local History Group’s visit to the Antrim coast. There’s also coverage of a charity vintage show in aid of the Sa
nds charity while Omagh Marie Curie group launch their Vintage Rally due to take place on June 10th.
We were also out covering Mountfield Community Association’s run and walk and there was also a good turnout for The Carmen Runners event at the weekend.
